The paper analyse the level of achievement of the Rural Development Programme’s objectives in Bulgaria. The programme started in 2008 and most of the measures are implemented. But effective payments have been done only under eight measures. Comparison of Industrial Dynamics of Food and Beverage Industry in Bulgaria, Romania and Greece AgEcon
Kopeva, Diana Ilieva; Shterev, Nikolay; Blagoev, Dimitar.
Industry dynamic is a key indicator for sustainable industry growth. It depends on variety of factors on international and regional level. One of the important driving forces on international level is seen in the face of economic and political alliances. Cultural and regional policies, and social behaviour are driving industry dynamics on a regional level though. Our hypothesis is that specific differences of industrial dynamics of the Balkan countries occurred based on economic and political alliances (EU membership; Euro zone, Black Sea Economic Cooperation). This hypothesis is verified with analysis of a traditional for the Balkans industrial sector like Food and Beverage. The paper aims to find out more evidence to verify a basic hypothesis. It...

Development of Organic Agriculture in Bulgaria (1990–2012): Actors, Relations, and Networks Organic Eprints
Slavova, P.; Moschitz, H.; Georgieva, Z..
This article analyses the development of organic agriculture (OA) in Bulgaria. It especially examines the actors, relations, and structures that shape organic sector policies. The Bulgarian case shows that sectorial agricultural policies can originate without the direct representation of farmers. Due to the dominance of consultancy NGOs and academic institutions in the policy network, OA first appeared as a political rather than as an economic or social and agricultural topic. However, this specificity contributed to the weak development of the organic sector in the country. Ultimately, farmers became engaged in the policy network for the benefit of the sector when the EU implemented organic subsidies. The article is based on both qualitative and...

DEVELOPMENT OF THE ORGANIC SECTOR IN POST-SOCIALIST BULGARIA 1990-2013 Organic Eprints
Stoeva, Svetla; Slavova, Petya; Georgieva, Zdravka.
The aim of the paper is to present the socio-economic and political aspects in the development of organic sector in post-socialist Bulgaria. It will question the building up of the organic concept in terms of national policies, farming practices and market forces in the country. That topic has its scientific relevance at least in three crucial dimensions. Firstly, because the legacy of the socialist system significantly affected the structure of the agricultural sector as well as the entrepreneurial behavior of the rural population under conditions of transition. Secondly, the analysis is important because it helps to identify the internal (national) and the external (out of the national context) driving forces that influence the development of the...

FARM RESTRUCTURING AND EFFICIENCY IN TRANSITION: EVIDENCE FROM BULGARIA AND HUNGARY AgEcon
Mathijs, Erik; Vranken, Liesbet.
Based on survey data on Bulgarian and Hungarian crop and dairy farms, a double-peaked distribution of technical efficiency is observed. Several factors explain differences in efficiency. Human capital matters not only through age and education, but also through gender as farms with a higher share of women are more efficient. Contracting with upstream processors increased efficiency through facilitating the adoption of technology and the access to credits. The superiority of family farms over corporate farms is confirmed for crops but not for dairy.
